Continuing the Pioneer Spirit through Volunteerism
The Junior League of Plano was inspired to create a whole new float for this year’s 4th of July parade in Plano Texas. The Annual Plano Early Lions Club Parade’s theme for this year’s parade was “Celebrating Freedom – Texas Style.” The Junior League of Plano, founded as the Plano Service League in May 1976, has always appreciated its Texas roots and is well known for its volunteerism. They partnered with Plano Boy Scout Troop 261, another strong volunteer in the community, to design and build this year’s float.
Several Junior League members, in conjunction with more than twenty scouts, dads and moms joined together to build an old fashioned covered wagon to go along with their own theme, “Continuing the Pioneer Spirit through Volunteerism.” eighteen Boy Scouts, including Scout Master Roger London, along with Junior League President, Melissa Norris, and thirty Junior League Members and their children marched proudly in this year’s parade along with the new float.
"The Junior League of Plano has enjoyed participating in Plano's 4th of July Parade annually. We appreciate the help of Boy Scout Troop 261 with the building of our float. It was a great experience for both our members and the Boy Scouts to volunteer their time to walk in the parade to help celebrate our nation's independence,"commented Melissa Norris, President of the Junior League of Plano.
The Junior League of Plano is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. For information on the JLP, visit www.jlplano.org.
